Government to introduce new cotton seeds

The government is evolving new varieties of cotton seeds to boost production of silver fibre and bring down the cost of output, the food minister said. Minister for National Food and Research Mehboob Sultan said Pakistan Agriculture Institute, an attached department of the Ministry, is working to enhance the productivity and quality of cotton by growing new varieties of cotton seed for the next sowing season of cotton. Advisor to the Prime Minister on Commerce, Textile, Industries, and Production and Investment Razak Dawood underscored the need for research to improve cotton quality and productivity amid falling production.
“This goal can only be achieved by introducing new varieties of seeds and other inputs including pesticides,” Dawood said. Research would maximize the profits of farmers/producers of cotton and minimize cotton imports.
